The Investigation
The inquiry was carried out by US law firm WilmerHale and focused on the circumstances that led to Altman’s departure from OpenAI last November. The results showed a breach of trust between the previous board and the current board, rather than misconduct or safety issues. The board acted appropriately, but did not foresee the volatility that followed.
The New Board Members
In addition to Altman’s return to the company, OpenAI also announced the addition of three new directors to its board:
Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann
Desmond-Hellmann is the former CEO of the BILL & MELIZABETH GATES Foundation. She is also a member of the Pfizer Board of Directors and provides scientific and technology advisory services to the President.
Nicole Seligman
Seligman is a highly experienced executive, having previously served as EVP and Global Counsel at Sony Corporation, and is a member of the boards of directors at Paramount Global Inc., Meira GTx Inc., and Intuitive Machines Inc.
Fidji Simo
Simo is the CEO and CEO-in-Chief of Instacart. She also serves on the Shopify Board of Directors.
Altman’s Reinstatement
OpenAI’s Board Chair, Bret Taylor, said in a statement, “We unanimously recommend Sam and Greg as the ideal leaders for OpenAI,” adding that Altman was grateful for the board’s support. “Mira Murati, our Chief Technology Officer, played a key role during the difficult period of November,” Taylor said.
Future Prospects
OpenAI will continue to grow its board. The company’s long-term vision for AI and its societal implications continue to inform OpenAI’s governance decisions.
With Mark Altman back leading OpenAI, the company is ready for the next chapter in AI exploration and innovation.
