Early Years and Rise to Fame

Lawrence was born Sidney Liebowitz on July 8, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York. At a young age, he discovered his love for music. He began his career in the heyday of Tin Pan Alley, performing alongside songwriters such as George Gerschwin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern.

Back in the late fifties, as rock ‘n’ roll took over the radio, Lawrence was faced with a difficult decision: should he follow in the footsteps of the new music or stay true to his roots? “I always wanted to be a Sinatra singer, not a Rick Nelson singer,” Lawrence quipped in 1989. Together with Gormé (known as “Steve” and “Eydie”), they continued to captivate listeners with their classic interpretations of beloved standards.

Hits and Solo Success

  • Steve and Eydie were well-known for their harmonies, but both also achieved success on their own.
  • In 1962, Lawrence broke hearts with the heartbreaking ballad “Go Away Little Girl“, written by the Brill Building duo of Gerry Goffin and Carole King.
  • Gormé followed it up the following year with the uplifting “Blame It On the Bossa Nova“, a dance-crazed anthem written by Brill collaborators Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
  • Steve and Eydie’s individual success did not detract from the magic they created as a duo. Steve and Eydie made their mark on the stages of Las Vegas, electrifying audiences with their show-stopping chemistry and stage presence. Their appearances on TV talk shows and nightclubs cemented their status as stars of the stage.

The Legacy Lives On

As the ‘70s began, Lawrence & Gormé continued to be one of the most popular acts at Las Vegas casinos and concert halls across the United States. Their timeless appeal resonated across generations, captivating the hearts of young and old alike. Their legendary love story, on and off the stage, became legendary.

Lawrence lost his battle with Alzheimer’s disease in his final years. He passed away on March 6, 2024 due to complications of the disease. His voice, his commitment, and the untold chapters of his music will live on forever.

Conclusion

With the passing of Steve Lawrence, an era has come to an end. An era of music that moved the soul, an era of love songs that healed. As we mourn the passing of this remarkable artist, let us reflect on the timeless melodies, the glitzy nights in Vegas and the timeless magic of Steve and Eydie.
