What is Super Tuesday?

Super Tuesday is one of the most important days of the U.S. Presidential election cycle. It takes place on a Tuesday each February or March. This day is when several states hold their presidential primary election or caucuses at the same time. Let’s take a closer look at what happens on Super Tuesday.

In the presidential primary calendar, Super Tuesday is when most states vote. The nominating contests are held in 15 states and one U.S. territory. The Republican Party (R.G.) holds primaries in all 15 states. The Democratic Party (D.C.) holds primaries in the same states, with the exception of Alaska. Democrats also hold primaries in American Samoa. The results of the ongoing D.C. primary in Iowa will also be announced.

Delegates Up for Grabs:

Each contest results in the awarding of delegates to the top contenders. On Super Tuesday, roughly one-third of the total delegates will be on the line: 865 for Republicans, and 1,420 for Democrats. The Trump campaign expects to win at least 773 delegates on this day, bringing them ever closer to securing the Republican nomination in March.

Currently, Trump holds an estimated 247 delegates, and his opponent Nikki Haley has 43. A minimum of 1,215 delegates are needed for a Republican nomination, and a magic number of 1,988 is needed for a Democratic nomination.

What’s at Stake for Trump?

With polls showing him up by double digits, the GOP front-runner is aiming to get his last remaining opponent out of the race.

Even Nikki Haley, who has lost to Trump six times in a row, is not out of the race yet. Super Tuesday could be her last opportunity to slow him down or reveal weaknesses in his campaign that could affect his chances of returning to the White House.

On the other hand, Trump has struggled to win over suburban college-educated voters, a group that could hurt his chances of making it back to the presidency.

Biden’s Position:

The Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, appears set to win his party’s nomination.

Biden has not wavered in the face of long-shot challengers, such as Congressman Dean Phillips (D-Colo.) and self-help writer Marianne Williamson (R-Minn.).

However, Biden did suffer a setback in Michigan, where 13% of voters said they were “uncommitted” to his campaign after he expressed support for Israel.

All in all, Super Tuesday is a crucial moment that will shape the path to the presidency for both parties as they head into November’s general election. Here’s a look at what each candidate stands for, what they are weak on, and what they might be vulnerable to.
